After Dark: Creating Magical Nighttime Wedding Atmospheres

Nov 11 / The IWED Blog

Some people will tell you the single most important feature of a wedding is the linen. Others will tell you it’s the color palette. These are no doubt important elements, but no wedding is worth its salt without proper lighting. And what better way to showcase it in all its glamor and drama than in the night where edges become softer and surfaces less glaring, where secrets are shared and old flames are ignited? In darkness lies great opportunity. A dazzling world of voluptuous shadows and candlelit still-lives awaits.

With the right decor and ambience, a nighttime wedding can be a legitimate feast for the senses. There is so much room for wonder and play, especially with lighting. Imagine how hauntingly romantic an aisle flanked by lanter-holding loved ones would look. Or how touching and cozy it would be to gather with your friends and family around fire pits. Sparklers would also make a lasting and striking impression if the venue allows it. If you don’t want to greet your guests with too much pomp and ceremony, though, keep it simple with an assortment of candles. Timeless, romantic, and ethereal, they’ll work with any theme or setting whether used to light pathways or dining tables. String lights are vibey too and much more adaptable as they can be festooned in trees and draped over fabric. Just remember to opt for warm, not cool!

Decor also has truly transformational power. Lighting is integral, but without the decorative elements to structure and bolster it, your enchanting nighttime wonderland may fall a bit flat. Think metallic charger plates or sparkling, sequin table runners and chair sashes. Night-blooming flowers such as casa blanca lilies and jasmine are another way to make it all feel like a fairytale. If you’re near a lagoon or forest, try incorporating tucked-away lounge areas under the moon and foliage.

And then of course there are practicalities such as weather and food and location to consider. If the destination is remote and there’s no daylight, make sure transportation is squared away with those who know the terrain well ahead of your wedding date. Nighttime weddings also mean late-night eats! A taco truck, for instance, if by the sea.

Or an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven for an intimate backyard setting. And don’t forget about inclement weather. If you don’t have an indoor option, tents will not only protect your guests from nighttime critters, but chilly outdoor temperatures. Everyone, including your elders, will appreciate the extra protection. A barn is another rustic and chic nighttime option. Dine and dance inside, then swing open the doors for some epic stargazing.

Now for the finale. How you bid farewell to your guests is as important as how you greet them. Go out with a bang with some fireworks. Or quietly release wish lanterns into the night with your kin. Whatever you feel is testament to your love. When it comes to nighttime weddings, the sky really is the limit.
